Grow Kit FAQs

Why buy a Grow Kit rather than our fresh mushrooms?

Well, why not do both.!? Buy some of our mushrooms to eat straight away and buy a Grow Kit to enjoy for couple of months. We love seeing people's reactions to Grow Kits. The experience of growing mushrooms at home never goes unappreciated, they are so quick to grow, it's like magic... or an alien. That’s what’s special about a Grow Kit, you’re not only getting a crop of mushrooms, but you’re getting to witness them grow. Besides, we all know that something you’ve tended yourself tastes better. And as a final added bonus, a Grow Kit can give you multiple harvests across the span of weeks or months!

I’m worried the grow kit will be difficult to use…

You have nothing to worry about! The Grow Kits are super easy to use. Oyster mushrooms in particular are very forgiving. We’ve done all the hard work to ensure the mycelium is in tip top condition and ready to grow you a beautiful crop of mushrooms. In short, all you have to do is cut a small hole in the fruiting block, take it out of the box, soak it, put it back in the box and carefully mist it twice a day until you’ve got a ready to harvest crop of mushrooms. You can read the full instructions HERE or CONTACT US with any questions.

What kind of mushroom Grow Kit should I choose?

Oyster mushrooms are a safe bet for everyone, they’re more resilient than other species, so will tolerate irregular misting. Oysters mushrooms are very determined and will always find a way to grow. They’re also easy to cook and delicious to eat.

The lauded Lion’s Mane mushrooms is a bit picker. With care and attention, it’ll give you a bountiful crop. They’re prone to drying out, so need to be carefully misted twice a day to thrive. They’re fussier about temperature too, and like to be grown somewhere between 10 and 20 degrees.

Both of our kits are designed for beginners, and with even minimal care should produce multiple flourishes of mushrooms.

I’ve bought the kit as a gift, how long can I store it for?

You can store the kit in a cool, dark place for two weeks, or keep it in the fridge for two months. If you want to buy a Grow Kit as a gift, but aren’t sure when the receiver will want to start growing it, a gift voucher is a great idea. You can buy one HERE

What is that white stuff in the bag?

That’s the mycelium. It's the organism responsible for breaking down the sawdust substrate and producing mushrooms. Mycelium really is magic, the individual threads are so small they can’t be seen with the naked eye, but so sprawling it can cover acres of ground. The largest known living mycelium covers 3.4 square miles and is thought to be over 2500 years old. Ask us for book recommendations if you want to learn more!

Where should I place my Grow Kit?

Your Grow Kit is designed to be grown inside. Keep it in sight, out of direct sunlight, as once the mycelium starts fruiting, the mushrooms will double in size every day, you don't want to miss it!

How often should I mist it?

Gently mist the grow kit at least twice a day. Keeping the mycelium and then mushrooms moist is key to having a good crop to harvest. Just don't let the mycelium go dry!

How do I know when the mushrooms are ready to harvest?

  • Oyster - You’ll know your mushrooms are ready to harvest when their caps are beginning to unfurl, but haven’t become flat.
  • Lion’s Mane - Keep an eye on the spines (we like to think of them as teeth!), as the mushroom grows they’ll become distinct from each other and grow up to 3cm long. You can harvest the Lion’s Mane once the teeth are 1cm long.

How do I harvest the mushrooms?

Twist and pull the mushrooms away from the fruiting block for a clean harvest. Try not to leave any mushroom debris on the mycelium, and remember to re-soak your block so you get a second flush.

Should I harvest all the mushrooms at once?

We advise harvesting all the mushrooms at the same time. This gives the mycelium time to rest and regroup before fruiting for a second (and third!) time.

My fruiting block won’t grow any more mushrooms, what do I do with it?

Once you’ve had your final harvest, you can compost the contents of your Grow Kit. The fruiting block make a rich supplement for your soil, not only because of the nutrients they contain, but also because of the way the mycelium interacts with the other organisms in the ground (check out ‘mycorrhizal relationships’ if you want to know more).

Are they pet safe?

We advise to keep the Grow Kits out of pets way (you don’t want them eating the mushrooms before you get a chance to!), but the mushrooms won’t hurt cats or dogs if licked or eaten.

How old do I need to be to have a Grow Kit?

We always advise a teenager or adult cut the hole in the fruiting block and do the soaking and draining. Once this has been done the kits can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. We’ve had six year olds excitedly tell us about how they carefully looked after and misted the mushrooms and how proud they were to harvest them. Watching mycelium fruit and the mushrooms grow is a wonderful process that’s enjoyed by people of all ages.

Can I recycle the bag?

The plastic bag that contained your mycelium can be recycled if it is clean.
