How to grow your mushrooms
What's included?
A fruiting block filled with fresh mycelium and spray bottle to keep your mycelium moist.
We do the tricky part, providing you a healthy block of mycelium. We use our years of experience and specialist equipment to make sure every block is perfect. We have a dedicated lab where we grow the mycelium cultures that we use to inoculate the fruiting blocks. The mycelium is grown on quality hardwood sawdust from local woodlands. All you have to do is fruit the mushrooms from the mycelium... easy!
How to grow your mushrooms
-The mycelium will mostly take care of itself, you just need to get it started and try to keep it in the right conditions for mushrooms to grow.
-Open the cardboard box and remove the block of mycelium. You’ll notice it’s heavy, this is why our Grow Kits produce such big mushrooms!
-Cut open the top corner of the bag and pour in about a litre of water until the mycelium is covered. Leave it to soak for one hour and then drain off the excess water. This step shocks the mycelium and gives it the hydration it needs to grow a beautiful big crop of mushrooms.
-Fold the plastic bag back over and return the fruiting block to its box.
-Peel the small sticker off of the front of the box, this is where your mushrooms will be growing from later.
-Cut open your mycelium block through the hole in the box using a knife or scissors. Removing the sticker exposes the mycelium to light and cutting open the plastic bag exposes the mycelium to fresh air, these are two of the main triggers for mushroom growth. You’re halfway there!
-Place the grow kit out of direct sunlight, but not in complete darkness and not out of sight… you don’t want to miss the mushrooms growing after all!
-Keep your mycelium damp by gently misting it twice a day. This step is key to getting a good harvest. You want to keep the exposed mycelium moist, because dry mycelium doesn’t grow happy mushrooms. If you have a humid house you may get away with misting less often, but we still recommend it. Use your judgement here, if the mycelium looks dry, mist more, if it looks very wet, maybe mist less.
-You should typically see mushrooms within 2 weeks!
-Some mushrooms are shy, if they take longer to grow, be patient. Factors like light, temperature, and humidity all affect the speed the mushrooms grow, and sometimes it feels like they have a mind of their own. If it’s been a long time or you’re concerned about your Grow Kit, please get in touch and we’ll offer our help.
-Keep misting your mushrooms right up until the day you harvest them.
-You’ll know your Oyster mushrooms are ready to harvest when the caps are beginning to unfurl, but haven’t become flat. Your mushrooms can double in size every day, so be sure to keep a close eye on them!
-With Lion’s Mane, Keep an eye on the spines (or teeth), as the mushrooms grows they’ll become distinct from each other and grow up to 3cm long. You can harvest the Lion’s Mane once the teeth are 1cm long.
Harvest your mushrooms by holding them at the base and twisting and pulling them off of the Grow Kit. Clean any mushroom debris off of the mycelium.
-Now for the best bit, if you repeat the above steps you can get a second, third or even a fourth harvest!
-You can compost your mycelium once you're done or really get the most out of it by using it to inoculate a tree stump or wood chip in your garden.
