Our spent substrate is what’s left after growing mushrooms. The substrate is made from a mixture of oak sawdust and bean husks and will be teaming with mycelium. The substrate acts as a wonderful mulch, it’s great for suppressing weeds, promoting moisture retention in the soil and, anecdotally, the worms love it! The mycelium improves the soil structure and helps plants access nutrients from the soil, and the substrate itself introduces a lot of organic matter, which turns into a very dark soil after a few months. An added bonus, if you keep it well watered, you’ll almost certainly get some gourmet mushrooms growing in your garden.

Ellie Gill is a local gardener, she’s been using our substrate to grow cut flowers in tanks, she said ‘This year I used some of the mushroom mulch from Basil‘s Fungi Farm for the first time. I’ve been growing lots of cut flowers just outside their workshop so it was a beautifully symbiotic relationship!

The flowers have needed very minimal watering, (despite being in containers) I simply put a thick layer of mulch on top of the soil and this held onto water really well. I also noticed within a few weeks there were tons of worms in the soil, whereas the containers without it didn’t have any life and dried out a lot more quickly. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to make gardening easier and to improve the health of their garden.’

We often give our spent substrate to Elliott Riley, who looks after the permaculture project at the St Leonards Academy. He’s said ….

“It is hard to imagine what our food forest at the Saint Leonard's academy without Robbie and his mushroom mulch. We must have taken tens of tonnes off him over the last few years; and the impact has been enormous. Worms wriggling in once-barren clay, soil dark where it used to be yellow, moisture retained after weeks of drought, and the constantly returning gift of mushrooms. To anyone looking to bring life back to their soil, I cannot recommend Robbie’s mulch highly enough. He’s a top class gent, he has a miraculous product, and I’m extremely grateful to work with him.”
